Vasil, Cardano's most recent and important upgrade, has finally gone live after several months of delays.

According to the Cardano Foundation, the Vasil upgrade comes after the platform implemented smart contract functionality in September last year and delivers much faster transaction times to Cardano.

Vasil's Successful Initiation

According to the Cardano Foundation, the five-day Cardano Vasil hard fork procedure began today, paving the way for better functionality and performance. The hard fork went live on Thursday at 9:44 PM UTC, and Cardano co-founder Charles Hoskinson described it as the most difficult update he and the developers had worked on since the platform's inception.

On Twitter, blockchain business Input Output Hong Kong announced the successful execution of the Cardano hard fork. At the same time, co-founder Charles Hoskinson hosted a Twitter Spaces chat with numerous users, during which the hard fork ticked over. Input Output announced the news on their Twitter account, writing,

"The #Vasil mainnet HFC event was a success!" We are pleased to inform you that the IOG team, in partnership with the @CardanoStiftung, successfully hard forked the Cardano mainnet via an HFC event today, at 21:44:00 UTC, bringing new #Vasil features to the chain."

There was no data loss during the fork

A hard fork happens when the code of the network or blockchain is modified, necessitating the production of a new and distinct version of the blockchain. A hard fork can be problematic at times, especially when not everyone in the community is on the same page. Hard forks, on the other hand, are rarely disputed.

A contentious hard fork would be the one that occurred on Ethereum following the successful completion of the Merge, which went live last week. The hard fork was started in order to keep Ethereum's Proof-of-Work version, which uses miners to validate and complete transactions.

Cardano, on the other hand, will not have to deal with such concerns with its Vasil hard fork because it will use Cardano's hard fork combinator technology. Cardano's hard fork combinator, according to Input Output Hong Kong, adds various new capabilities while retaining all data related to prior versions.
