Stephen Koseff
About
Stephen Koseff is the banker who, with long-time partner Bernard Kantor, built Investec from a small leasing-and-finance house into a dual-listed international specialist bank and asset manager. He joined Investec in 1980 and served as chief executive for around three decades, steering its expansion from Johannesburg into the United Kingdom and beyond, and its evolution into private banking, wealth and investment management, and corporate advisory. Investec's distinctive entrepreneurial culture and international footprint — with primary listings in both Johannesburg and London — made it one of South Africa's most recognisable financial brands, and later spun off the asset manager Ninety One. Koseff's wealth was built through his substantial Investec shareholding accumulated over his long tenure, and it tracks the value of the group's listed shares and the interests that spun out of it. He stepped down as chief executive in 2018 after a career that made him one of the elder figures of South African banking. His holdings are concentrated in Investec-linked listed shares.
