About

Gerrit Thomas 'GT' Ferreira is one of the three founders of FirstRand, alongside Laurie Dippenaar and Paul Harris. The trio started the small merchant bank Rand Consolidated Investments in 1977, which grew into Rand Merchant Bank (RMB) and, through successive mergers, into the FirstRand group that owns First National Bank (FNB), RMB and WesBank. Ferreira served as chairman of RMB Holdings and was a central figure in the distinctive owner-manager culture that made the group one of South Africa's most consistently profitable financial institutions. The long-run appreciation of the FirstRand-linked shares turned the founders' stakes into substantial fortunes. Ferreira's wealth is held largely through interests in FirstRand and the associated RMB Holdings and Remgro-linked investment structures that emerged from the same stable. Known for his wine-farming interests around Stellenbosch and a relatively private lifestyle, he remains one of the enduring figures of modern South African banking. His holdings are concentrated in the FirstRand-linked listed investments.

Source of wealth

Co-founded the FirstRand banking group. Ferreira's wealth comes from his founding interest in FirstRand — parent of FNB, Rand Merchant Bank and WesBank — which he helped build from a small merchant bank into one of South Africa's 'big four' financial-services groups.

Disclosed holdings

Listed (JSE): Founding-linked interests in JSE-listed FirstRand and associated investment holding structures (RMB Holdings / Remgro lineage).

Private: Wine-farming and private investments connected to the RMB stable.

Holdings are drawn from public company disclosures and credible reporting; private interests are harder to value and lower our confidence rating.

How we estimate this
