Samsung Securities and six other brokerages have applied to open cryptocurrency exchanges in South Korea in 2023.

According to local news agency NewsPim, seven large domestic companies in South Korea have filed applications to open Bitcoin and other cryptocurrency exchanges next year. According to the report, two of the firms seeking preliminary approval to operate exchanges in the first half of 2023 are Samsung Securities, the financial arm of the Samsung Group, and Mirae Asset Securities. Mirae is South Korea's largest investment bank by market capitalization, managing R10.9 trillion in assets. Mirae is looking for technical staff to work on Bitcoin and blockchain-based platform research and development.

Samsung is conducting similar research into how to best enter the Bitcoin and cryptocurrency ecosystem. It attempted to spearhead the development of a cryptocurrency trading platform last year but failed to secure the necessary personnel. According to the report, Samsung Securities is investigating the best way to provide cryptocurrencies, NFTs, and possibly tokenized securities to South Korean customers.

According to the news report, the country's regulations may change as a result of Yun Suk-election Yeol as President. Suk-Yeol campaigned on promises of greater economic stability for all social classes, a shift in diplomatic relations with China, and the implementation of pro-crypto policies.

The South Korean government, under new leadership, is working on legislation to provide the industry with clear regulatory frameworks. The regulation is known as the "Virtual Currency Business Rights Act," and major South Korean securities firms are preparing for its approval. The Act is intended to clarify which digital assets are securities and which are not. In addition, the classification will differentiate between digital asset custody services, wallet services, and others.

Despite the fact that South Korea appears to be loosening restrictions on digital assets, the authorities have targeted several cryptocurrency exchanges for wrongdoing. The government took action against sixteen unregistered exchanges in the country last week.
