American Express Gold Credit card Review 2026
American Express cards in South Africa are issued exclusively by Nedbank — there's no evidence any other SA bank issues Amex cards. Verified against Nedbank's own site in July 2026.
Key features
- Monthly fee: R145 (R120 service fee + R25 credit facility fee).
- Once-off setup fee: R199 for credit limits up to R10,000, or R219 for limits above R10,000.
- Minimum income: R17,000/month gross, plus a healthy credit score.
- Membership Rewards: free to join, 1 point per R5 spent, no expiry and no cap on points; 5,000 bonus points for spending R10,000 in your first 3 months.
Note: an older Nedbank fee schedule referenced a separate R32/month Membership Rewards fee — the current live product page states enrollment is free, so use that as the current figure.
Is it worth it?
At R145/month plus a R199–R219 setup fee, the Amex Gold earns its keep if you spend enough to make the uncapped, non-expiring Membership Rewards points worthwhile — the R17,000/month income threshold puts it above most entry-level cards. If you spend less or want a lower fee, compare other South African credit cards first.
How to apply
Apply via Nedbank's website or app; approval depends on meeting the income requirement and Nedbank's credit assessment.
