Jump Crypto to make a new Solana (SOL) validator
Jump Crypto has announced its aim to create a new validator client for the Solana network developed in the C++ programming language.
Jump Crypto executive Kevin Bowers, a former UC-Berkeley researcher, is leading the initiative.
The Jump Trading subsidiary, most known for its investment in the notorious Wormhole project, which resulted in the loss of R5.3 billion, has created a cryptocurrency team of over 100 people, including a team dedicated to developing on Solana.
What the project seeks to accomplish
The new validator will be written in C++, the same programming language as the Bitcoin network's core.
To become a validator, you must lock up or "stake" SOL tokens in order to verify the legitimacy of transactions on Solana and get a reward. When Coinbase Cloud and Jump Crypto supply the service, they operate as validator pools, allowing smaller holders of SOL to gain rewards. Solana employs proof-of-history, a cryptographic method of tracking time stamps in a blockchain. Unlike Ethereum, which uses a centralized entity to timestamp transaction blocks, Solana's timestamping is decentralized and hence better suited to a distributed system. It can specify when the transaction occurred in the blockchain's past and future.
However, Solana has its skeptics, who say that the network trades decentralization for transaction speed. Furthermore, Jump crypto's large investment in Solana appears to contradict the decentralized idea.
In defense of the Jump validator, CEO Kanav Kariya stated that his company would be the first to run the Solana blockchain outside of the Solana engineering team. The new validator will coexist with the current version of Solana.
According to Jump Crypto, the project will help to increase Solana adoption while also contributing to further technical advancements and network decentralization.
Jump's experience will be used in this project
Jump Crypto's experience in market-making for crypto comes from its parent company's background as a quantitative trading firm that witnessed the evolution of market-making from paper to computer algorithms that exploit minute price movements. It is well-known for making VC-like investments in cryptocurrency projects. It was a strong supporter of Wormhole, a cryptocurrency initiative that allows tokens to flow across different blockchains.
Jump Crypto backed the failed TerraUSD project with the intention of breaking into the nascent market of algorithmic stablecoins.
The company can experiment more freely than companies whose core business is crypto since it has the backing of its quantitative trading unit.
