Cardano Vasil upgrade outlook

Cardano Builder IOG, in conjunction with the Cardano Foundation, triggered the hard fork combinator event on September 22 to implement Vasil at the protocol level. Days later, Rick McCracken DIGI, who administers the Cardano DIGI stake pool, took to Twitter to offer his thoughts on the network.

According to Rick, block propagation speeds have remained consistent at around 300 milliseconds, a significant decrease from over 1,600 milliseconds prior to the hard fork. The network sync rate is around 99%, indicating a high-performance network. Diffusion pipelining, a further innovation to the consensus layer that enables speedier block propagation, is included in the Vasil release.

Diffusion pipelining effectively accelerates the process of spreading information about freshly formed blocks across network users by assuring that blocks can be shared (propagated) on the network within five seconds of being created (the safe security "ceiling"). Diffusion pipelining propagates blocks prior to full validation, "overlapping" the time spent on diffusion and the time required for validation. Another "important" date is September 27.

Monitoring will continue for at least four epochs following the hard fork, after which a decision on future changes will be taken based on "normal" network bandwidth. On September 27, developers will have access to full Vasil functionality, including support for reference inputs, inline datums, reference scripts, collateral outputs, and a new Plutus pricing model.  The Cardano developer community is still enthused about this day.

Lucid, a Cardano user, tweeted,   "Tomorrow we will see the rest of the Vasil improvements upgraded onto the Cardano Mainnet! This is bringing the rest of the upgrades for Plutus 2 along with CIP 31-33! Developers will now be able to build and launch all of their projects, beginning the new era of Cardano DeFi."
