In a surprising twist at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES), beauty giant L’Oréal has introduced the AirLight Pro, a revolutionary hairdryer that incorporates infrared light technology to transform the conventional drying process. Known for its innovative beauty products, L’Oréal’s latest creation aims to redefine the hairstyling experience.
Taking inspiration from nature, the AirLight Pro utilizes a combination of infrared light and powerful airflow to mimic the way the environment dries rain. Guive Balooch, global vice president of L’Oréal’s Technology Incubator, explains that, similar to the wind and sun effectively drying rain, the hairdryer’s combination of infrared light and airflow reduces the need for excessive heat, providing a gentler drying experience for hair.
The AirLight Pro features a circle of infrared lights surrounding a motor that directs airflow. Different wavelengths of infrared light are employed, with red/yellow light resembling UV light, which can be damaging to hair. On the other hand, blue and purple light have a more hydrating effect. This innovative approach aims to not only expedite the drying time by 30 percent but also reduce energy usage by an impressive 31 percent.

L’Oréal collaborated with Zuvi, a startup founded by former DJI engineers experienced in light-based hairdryers, to bring the AirLight Pro to life. Alongside the hairdryer, a dedicated app allows users to customize heat preferences, and the device comes with smart attachments, including a diffuser and a concentrator nozzle. These attachments are automatically recognized by the hairdryer, adjusting speed and temperature accordingly.
The AirLight Pro is positioned for both professional and consumer use, with an initial release in salons under the L’Oréal Professionnel brand. Consumers can expect the product to be available later in the year, with L’Oréal targeting a price point below R7,600 ($400).
In addition to the AirLight Pro, L’Oréal provided updates on previous CES showcased products. The Colorsonic, a home hair-dying gadget revealed in 2022, is currently in production and is set to launch in mid-2024. Meanwhile, the Brow Magic makeup applicator from the previous year is scheduled to make its debut in Asia under the Shu Uemura brand at the end of 2024.
