In a bid to bolster the development of information and communication technology (ICT) skills and tackle unemployment in Limpopo, Minister in the Presidency responsible for Women, Youth, and Persons with Disabilities, Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, is set to unveil the University of Limpopo Digital Innovation Lab (LDIL) on Wednesday.
The LDIL, a pioneering initiative, aims to equip individuals with essential skills in software development, thereby addressing the pressing issue of unemployment in the region. With a robust curriculum encompassing coding, programming fundamentals, and digital social innovation, LDIL is poised to make a substantial impact on the local community.
Through its Software Development Programme, LDIL endeavors to empower 25 unemployed youth annually over a 10-month period. This initiative not only imparts theoretical knowledge but also provides practical, real-world experience, ensuring that participants are well-prepared to enter the job market with confidence.
As the Chancellor of the University of Limpopo, Dr. Dlamini Zuma will deliver the keynote address at the official launch of LDIL. The collaboration between the university, Samsung Electronics South Africa, and the Department of Trade, Industry, and Competition (dtic) underscores a concerted effort to drive innovation and create opportunities for women, youth, and persons with disabilities in Limpopo.
“This historic event marks a significant milestone in our efforts to empower marginalized groups and foster innovation in Limpopo,” remarked the department in a statement. “We believe that LDIL will serve as a beacon of inspiration, not only for the region but for the entire nation.”
The inauguration ceremony, which will include the unveiling of the official plaque and ribbon cutting, is scheduled to take place at the university’s esteemed R-40 Conference Hall. This event signifies a collaborative endeavor to propel socio-economic development and pave the way for a brighter future for the youth of South Africa.
