In a bid to further empower musicians and deepen engagement with their fan base, TikTok announced the launch of artist accounts on Thursday. These accounts provide musicians with a suite of tools designed to enhance their reach, connect with fans, and streamline the music discovery process.
A standout feature of these artist accounts is the introduction of the Music tab, a curated space that showcases an artist’s catalog while automatically updating with new releases. This feature simplifies the music discovery process for fans, making it easier to explore an artist’s body of work.
TikTok’s artist accounts now include a “Behind the Song” feature, offering fans an intimate glimpse into the creative process. Musicians can share the inspiration and stories behind their tracks, providing a unique connection between artists and their audience.
Musicians now have enhanced control over their visibility on TikTok. The ability to pin a preferred post to the top of the discovery page allows artists to showcase specific content. Additionally, the introduction of the “Artist” tag enables users to easily verify a musician’s status on the platform.
The “New Release” tag empowers artists to highlight upcoming tracks up to two weeks before their official release and for 30 days thereafter. This feature allows musicians to build anticipation and strategically promote their latest creations. Notably, South Korean boy band BTS successfully trialed this feature earlier this year to promote their single, Take Two.
TikTok’s latest features seem to draw inspiration from popular streaming platforms like Spotify. The Music tab’s similarity to Spotify’s artist profiles and the ability to highlight new music before release mirrors the functionality of Spotify’s Countdown Pages for upcoming albums.
In a move that further integrates TikTok into the larger music ecosystem, the platform recently introduced the “Add to Music App” feature. This feature appears as an “Add Song” button, allowing users to seamlessly save TikTok-discovered music to their preferred streaming services, including Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music.
Paul Hourican, Global Head of Music Partnerships and Programming at TikTok, expressed excitement about the Artist Account launch, stating, “With the introduction of the Artist Account, we are proud to further empower artists by providing them with the tools they need to reach new heights on TikTok.”
These innovative features align with TikTok’s broader push into streaming, particularly after the recent launch of TikTok Music, the platform’s subscription-driven streaming service. As TikTok continues to evolve, it solidifies its position as a significant player in the music discovery landscape.
In a statement, Hourican added, “We’re seeing how these features can deepen engagement while creating unique opportunities for fans to connect with their favorite artists in meaningful ways, driving music discovery on the platform.”
As TikTok blurs the lines between social media and music streaming, its impact on the music industry is poised to grow, providing both artists and fans with novel avenues for interaction and exploration.
