  • SSDs are becoming the new minimum storage requirement for PC games.
  • Starfield and Cyberpunk 2077 are leading the way by mandating SSDs as the minimum spec.
  • The transition to SSDs is driven by their faster loading times, improved performance, and superior streaming capabilities compared to HDDs.

In a momentous turn of events, Microsoft’s Xbox Games Showcase recently unveiled that Bethesda’s highly anticipated title, Starfield, will mandate a minimum storage capacity of 125GB on solid-state drives (SSDs) when it launches on September 6th. This groundbreaking announcement marks a significant shift in the gaming industry, as developers start prioritizing SSDs over traditional hard disk drives (HDDs) as the standard storage solution for PC games.

Until now, while SSDs have become increasingly prevalent in cutting-edge gaming rigs and laptops, game developers had refrained from making them a mandatory requirement. However, Starfield’s minimum spec revelation has sparked discussions about the future of storage in gaming and the implications it holds for players.

Notably, CD Projekt Red, the renowned developer behind the critically acclaimed Cyberpunk 2077, has also made headlines by announcing an update to the game’s minimum system requirements, enforcing the need for an SSD instead of an HDD. CD Projekt Red’s decision to phase out HDD support is directly tied to the upcoming Phantom Liberty expansion. While the base PC game will soon receive an update reflecting the SSD minimum spec, Cyberpunk 2077 will continue to function on HDDs, albeit with potential performance issues and bugs.

The move toward SSDs is justified by their undeniable advantages over HDDs. CD Projekt Red explained in a recent blog post that SSDs offer faster loading times, improved streaming capabilities, and overall superior performance compared to their traditional counterparts. These benefits have propelled SSDs to the forefront as the storage solution of choice for game developers and users seeking an enhanced gaming experience.

The transition to SSDs as the minimum requirement for PC games is an inevitable consequence of leaving behind the previous generation of consoles. With the Xbox One and PS4, both equipped with HDDs, gradually becoming obsolete, developers are embracing the full potential of the Xbox Series S/X and PS5, both of which feature SSDs. Given that consoles often influence cross-platform game development, the prevalence of SSDs in current-gen consoles will undoubtedly drive the widespread adoption of SSDs in PC gaming.

While the migration to SSDs will occur gradually, developers are gearing up to fully leverage the benefits of this advanced storage technology, including faster loading times and enhanced game performance. The transition also opens up possibilities for broader support of technologies like DirectStorage, which further amplifies the gaming experience.

While game developers are unlikely to outright block games from running on HDDs in the near future, players still relying on these traditional storage devices may encounter performance issues and bugs as active support and testing for HDDs are phased out. As a result, the gaming community is encouraged to consider upgrading to SSDs to ensure optimal gameplay and to keep pace with the evolving requirements of modern PC games.

With Starfield and Cyberpunk 2077 setting the precedent, it is highly probable that more PC games will follow suit, mandating SSDs as the minimum storage specification. Gamers who have cherished the era of spinning disks will soon bid farewell to traditional HDDs, embracing a new era of speed, efficiency, and silence.

The transition to SSDs represents a significant milestone in the gaming industry, paving the way for a future where faster storage solutions become the norm. As game developers continue to push boundaries, players can anticipate an immersive and seamless gaming experience that harnesses the full potential of SSD technology.
