In an unexpected move, Google is set to expand its colour options for the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, hinting at the release of a new mint green variant. The Pixel team’s social media channels have been buzzing with teasers, indicating that this refreshing hue will hit the shelves on Thursday, January 25th. What’s more, this particular colour will be an exclusive offering available only through the Google Store and Google Fi.

Fresh Year, Fresh Drop: Decoding the Teasers

The messaging from Google is far from subtle, with the binary code in their social media posts translating to “fresh year, fresh drop.” This clever play on words suggests that the tech giant has something exciting in store for its users, and the vibrant mint green colour could be just the thing.

A keen eye may have noticed earlier signs of Google’s plan for a mint Pixel 8 and 8 Pro. The company already sells a mint silicone case for the phone, though it doesn’t match the existing hardware colour choices. Several months ago, the Google Store website briefly displayed this case with a green camera bar, essentially confirming the existence of a light green version of the device. The delay in its release may have been a strategic move by Google, possibly to give sales a boost in the new year.

Exclusive Availability and Retail Strategy

The mint green Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro will be a unique offering, available only through the Google Store and Google Fi. This exclusivity means that carriers and retailers such as Amazon and Best Buy are unlikely to offer this particular colour option. Google’s decision to limit the distribution channels could be a move to create a sense of rarity and exclusiveness around the new variant.

This strategy aligns with Google’s history of introducing new colours to its Pixel phones several months after the initial release. A notable example is the “barely blue” version of the Pixel 4A in 2020, which generated considerable interest among consumers.

Discounts and Savings: A Limited-Time Opportunity

In a bid to sweeten the deal, Google continues to offer aggressive discounts on both the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. The Pixel 8 Pro, originally priced at $999, is currently available for $799, a $200 discount. Similarly, the regular Pixel 8, which usually retails at $699, is now discounted to $549. These savings are expected to persist through next week, providing potential buyers with an added incentive to opt for the new mint colour variant.
