In a groundbreaking partnership, tech giant Apple and entertainment powerhouse Disney have joined forces to introduce an innovative virtual reality (VR) headset named Vision Pro. This cutting-edge device aims to revolutionize the viewing experience by offering immersive 3D content from Disney Plus and other popular streaming services.
Apple and Disney have announced that Vision Pro will feature exclusive 3D content from Disney Plus at its launch. Subscribers to Disney Plus will also enjoy special animated screening environments tailored to accompany their viewing experience. Notable apps that will support Vision Pro include ESPN, MLB, PGA Tour, Max, Discovery Plus, Amazon Prime Video, Paramount Plus, Peacock, Pluto TV, Tubi, Fubo, Crunchyroll, Red Bull TV, IMAX, TikTok, and MUBI. However, Netflix seems to be absent from the initial list, with assurances that the existing app will seamlessly function on the new headset.
The announcement highlights a selection of 3D movies available on Vision Pro, including highly anticipated titles like “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Avengers: Endgame,” “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” and “Encanto.” These movies will be available for rent through the Apple TV app. Existing owners of these films will be pleased to know that they will receive 3D versions without any additional charge. Apple promises to unveil more titles, including exclusive releases for Disney Plus subscribers, at a later date.
Disney Plus subscribers using Vision Pro will have access to four unique screening environments. These include the Disney Plus Theater, inspired by Hollywood’s El Capitan Theatre, and others based on Pixar’s “Monsters, Inc.,” the Avengers Tower from Marvel Avengers films, and a setting in the cockpit of a landspeeder in Star Wars’ Tatooine desert.
Apart from Disney content, the Apple TV app will offer free “immersive entertainment.” This includes exclusive experiences such as “Alicia Keys: Rehearsal Room” and a film from the producers of Planet Earth, titled “Prehistoric Planet Immersive.”
While Hollywood studios have long attempted to make 3D a standard in home entertainment, it has yet to gain widespread adoption. Previous efforts involving clunky 3D glasses and stereoscopic screens fell short of expectations. The Vision Pro, with its advanced technology, may provide a more compelling 3D experience. However, the challenge lies in the limited availability of these pricey headsets, which may hinder widespread adoption even a year from now.
The collaboration between Apple and Disney to introduce Vision Pro represents a significant leap in the realm of immersive 3D entertainment. As technology continues to advance, it remains to be seen whether this collaboration will mark a turning point for 3D content consumption outside traditional movie theatres. South African consumers can anticipate a new dimension in their home entertainment experiences with the arrival of Vision Pro. Stay tuned for updates on additional content offerings and the evolution of this groundbreaking technology.
