Cabinet has enthusiastically embraced President Cyril Ramaphosa’s proclamation of May 29, 2024, as the slated date for the General Elections in South Africa. This decision follows extensive consultations between the President, the Electoral Commission of South Africa, and all nine provincial Premiers regarding the nation’s readiness for both national and provincial elections.
Speaking at a media briefing on Thursday, Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, underscored the importance of citizen engagement in the electoral process. Particularly, she emphasized the significance of the youth exercising their right to vote.
“The years of untold sacrifice and struggle for our freedom culminated in the right to vote for the majority of South Africans in 1994. Our ongoing struggle for freedom has ensured that every South African can actively participate in our democratic system,” Minister Ntshavheni stated.
She highlighted the symbolic alignment of this year’s elections with the commemoration of 30 Years of Freedom, offering South Africans an opportunity to reflect on past achievements while addressing current challenges.
In a related development, Cabinet also took note of President Ramaphosa’s recent meeting with the Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry to address pressing issues within the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality. The President’s initiatives, aimed at addressing water, electricity, and infrastructure challenges, received Cabinet’s full support.
Furthermore, President Ramaphosa established the Presidential eThekwini Working Group to expedite the resolution of issues plaguing the municipality. Comprising Ministers, municipal officials, and business representatives, this group will provide regular progress reports to the President.
In a separate matter, Cabinet acknowledged South Africa’s successful hosting of the 14th Policy Dialogue Forum (PDF) of the International Task Force on Teachers for Education in Sandton, Johannesburg, on February 26.
This international event convened education stakeholders worldwide to advocate for quality education and monitor progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 4. The forum released a High-Level Panel Report on the Teaching Profession and launched the Global Report on teacher shortages.
As South Africa gears up for the upcoming elections, the government underscores the importance of citizen participation and commitment to fostering sustainable development across various sectors. Through collaborative efforts and effective governance, the nation aims to address challenges and build on past achievements, ensuring a brighter future for all South Africans.
