In a significant bust, members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) border policing unit have thwarted an attempt to smuggle dagga into South Africa. The apprehension took place at the Oshoek Port of Entry, where a 43-year-old truck driver from the Kingdom of Eswatini was detained in the early hours of Thursday morning.
The SAPS reported that the suspect was subjected to a search at approximately 00:30am on the arrivals side of the port. During the search, diligent officers uncovered the dagga cleverly concealed beneath a load of timber. Consequently, the driver was promptly detained and charged accordingly.
The seizure amounted to a staggering 150kgs of dagga, with an estimated street value of R630 840. The truck, bearing number plates from the Kingdom of Eswatini, was confiscated along with the illicit substance for further investigation.
The apprehended suspect is scheduled to make an appearance at the Elukwatini Magistrate’s Court today, facing charges related to drug trafficking.
Commending the officers for their unwavering commitment, Mpumalanga Provincial Commissioner of Police, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, expressed her appreciation. She stated, “The continuous arrests and successes witnessed at the borders prove that indeed the members are working with diligence. They are doing excellent work on a daily basis.”
