As South Africa gears up for the upcoming national and provincial elections on May 29, 2024, President Cyril Ramaphosa issues a stern warning against any attempts to subvert the democratic process. Addressing the nation during the Human Rights Day commemoration in Sharpeville, President Ramaphosa emphasized the importance of upholding the principles of democracy and safeguarding the integrity of the electoral system.

Highlighting the significance of the forthcoming elections, President Ramaphosa underscored that the sanctity of the electoral process must be preserved at all costs. He condemned any form of intimidation, threats, or undemocratic behavior aimed at undermining the electoral process, stressing that such actions will not be tolerated.

“In just over two months from now, South Africans will go to the polls to vote in the 7th democratic election for national and provincial government. We must not tolerate the threats, intimidation and undemocratic actions of those who want to undermine our electoral process,” affirmed President Ramaphosa.

Moreover, the President emphasized that the exercise of voting is not merely a right but a fundamental aspect of democracy, allowing citizens to select their representatives freely and in secret. He called for a broader engagement of citizens in decision-making processes beyond elections, advocating for increased participation in governmental consultations at all levels.

“We must go beyond the right to vote. We must create more space and open up more opportunities for all citizens to have a say in the decisions that affect them,” remarked President Ramaphosa.

President Ramaphosa urged for the empowerment of citizens through strengthened consultative mechanisms within governmental institutions, fostering inclusivity and meaningful engagement. He emphasized the importance of grassroots initiatives and community-based organizations in amplifying the voices of ordinary citizens.

“We must support community-based organizations and initiatives, religious formations, women’s organizations, and youth bodies,” stated the President.

Furthermore, President Ramaphosa highlighted the pivotal role of active citizenship in nurturing a robust democracy. He stressed the significance of exercising rights such as freedom of association, expression, assembly, and demonstration in shaping the nation’s future.

“Democracy thrives when people use the rights guaranteed to them to determine their own future,” asserted President Ramaphosa.

Reflecting on South Africa’s journey towards democracy, President Ramaphosa acknowledged the progress made over the past three decades while recognizing the challenges that lie ahead. He emphasized the need for collective commitment in advancing human rights and ensuring equal opportunities for all citizens.

“Working together, as a nation united, we have built a democracy that recognizes the equal worth of every person,” affirmed President Ramaphosa.

In conclusion, President Ramaphosa called upon South Africans to reaffirm their dedication to upholding human rights and fostering inclusivity as the nation continues its journey towards a more equitable society.

“As we commemorate Human Rights Day, let us pledge to ourselves and each other that we will travel that road together,” concluded President Ramaphosa.
