In a move aimed at streamlining operations and enhancing service delivery, Umgeni Water and Mhlathuze Water, two prominent water boards in KwaZulu-Natal, have announced their merger. The integration of the two entities will result in the formation of a new organization known as uMngeni – uThukela Water, which will officially commence its operations on July 1, 2023.
The amalgamation of Umgeni Water and Mhlathuze Water was made possible through the expansion of Umgeni Water’s operational boundary to include Mhlathuze Water. This strategic decision will enable the unified organization to optimize resources, improve efficiency, and provide more effective water management services throughout the region.
Mr. Senzo Mchunu, the Minister of Water and Sanitation, played a crucial role in overseeing and approving the merger. This initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to consolidating and strengthening water management systems across the country, ensuring sustainable access to clean water for all citizens.
The announcement of the change of name from Umgeni Water to uMngeni – uThukela Water was made public in the Government Gazette No 48833 dated 19 June 2023. Effective from July 1, 2023, the rebranded organization will reflect the expanded geographical scope of operations and the integration of resources and expertise.
The merger holds immense potential for the residents and businesses of KwaZulu-Natal, as it combines the strengths and capabilities of two well-established water boards.
