In a significant stride towards advancing educational assessment in Africa and beyond, Umalusi CEO, Dr. Mafu Rakometsi, recently announced the satisfactory progress in preparations for hosting the 40th Association for Educational Assessment in Africa (AEAA) Annual Conference. Held on Friday during a media briefing, Rakometsi expressed confidence in the readiness for the conference, slated to occur from 19th to 23rd August 2024 at the esteemed Century City Conference Centre and Hotel in Cape Town.
The theme for this landmark event is “Reimagining Educational Assessment in the Age of Multiple Dimensions of Learning in a Global Society.” As the AEAA plays a pivotal role in fostering best practices in educational assessment among member institutions, this conference holds immense significance for educators, policymakers, and assessment practitioners across the African continent and beyond.
Reflecting on Umalusi’s legacy in hosting the 21st AEAA Conference in Cape Town in 2003, Rakometsi expressed gratitude for the decision to return the conference to South Africa after 21 years. This milestone aligns with Umalusi’s journey, coinciding with the celebration of two decades of its existence, making it a fitting occasion to commemorate progress and chart the future of educational assessment.
With an expected attendance of over 300 delegates, including assessment specialists, academics, policymakers, and educationists from various regions globally, the conference promises rich discourse and collaboration. Rakometsi emphasized the opportunity for dialogue within diverse educational contexts to address mutual concerns and challenges faced by Umalusi and other global education systems.
Calling for support from Umalusi partners in South Africa and beyond, Rakometsi urged relevant stakeholders to contribute abstracts and papers for consideration by the organizing committee. Partners such as the Department of Basic Education, Department of Higher Education and Training, and other educational institutions play a crucial role in ensuring the success of the conference.
The conference’s format includes a workshop on assessment-related topics to enhance the capacity of practitioners, preceding the main event. Additionally, organizations are invited to exhibit their services and products, providing a platform for interaction and networking among participants.
Dr. David Njengere, President of the AEAA, echoed Rakometsi’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of support from educational and business entities. He highlighted the role of sponsorships and exhibitions in enhancing the conference experience, calling for partnerships to showcase products and services that contribute to educational advancement.
As preparations continue, both Umalusi and the AEAA express confidence in the success of the upcoming conference. With collaborative efforts and support from stakeholders, the 40th AEAA Annual Conference in Cape Town aims to be a memorable and impactful gathering, driving forward the agenda of educational assessment in the evolving landscape of global education.
