The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has initiated a comprehensive investigation into a distressing incident resulting in the loss of two members while on deployment with the United Nations Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO). The incident, which transpired on Thursday, saw one SANDF member fatally shooting another before turning the weapon on themselves, leading to tragic consequences.

Expressing deep concern, the SANDF revealed that the incident unfolded when one of its members employed their service weapon, resulting in the untimely demise of both individuals involved. In response to this unfortunate occurrence, the SANDF has promptly convened a Board of Inquiry in collaboration with MONUSCO command to meticulously examine the incident and the factors contributing to it.

Defence and Military Veterans Minister Thandi Modise conveyed her profound shock regarding the incident, emphasizing the gravity of the situation involving the two officials deployed to the central African country. Efforts are underway to repatriate the remains of the deceased members to South Africa, with all affected families duly notified of the tragic incident.

Minister Modise, along with Deputy Minister Thabang Makwetla, acting Secretary for Defence Dr. Thobekile Gamede, and Chief of the SANDF General Rudzani Maphwanya, have extended their heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, acknowledging the profound loss suffered.

This unfortunate incident comes in the wake of a recent tragedy where the SANDF repatriated and formally handed over the mortal remains of Captain Simon Mkhulu Bobe and Lance Corporal Irven Thabang Semono to their families. Bobe and Semono lost their lives, while three of their comrades sustained injuries in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) after a mortar bomb struck one of the South African contingency military bases.

The deceased soldiers were part of the Southern African Development Community Mission in the DRC (SAMIDRC), tasked with providing support and assistance to the government of the second-largest country in Africa to foster peace, security, and stability.

In light of these unfortunate events, the SANDF underscores its commitment to ensuring a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the recent incident, with a primary focus on identifying potential contributing factors and preventing similar occurrences in the future. Additionally, efforts are being made to provide support and assistance to the families of the deceased during this difficult period.

As investigations progress, the SANDF remains steadfast in upholding its mandate to serve and protect the nation’s interests both at home and abroad, while also honoring the sacrifices made by its members in the pursuit of peace and security in the region.

This detailed investigation aims to shed light on the events leading up to the tragic loss of life and to provide closure for the families affected by this devastating incident. The SANDF reiterates its unwavering commitment to transparency, accountability, and ensuring the safety and well-being of its personnel deployed on peacekeeping missions.

In conclusion, the SANDF acknowledges the profound impact of this incident on the nation and reaffirms its dedication to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and integrity in its operations, both domestically and internationally. As the investigation progresses, updates will be provided to ensure transparency and accountability in addressing this tragic event.
