In a bid to address the pressing issue of skill shortages within South Africa, the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) has been actively advancing its Trusted Employer Scheme (TES). This initiative seeks to facilitate the recruitment of international workers by streamlining the visa application process, a move that is anticipated to bolster the country’s workforce and stimulate economic growth.
The current visa application system in South Africa has been criticized for its lengthy processing times and intricate procedures, posing significant challenges for businesses seeking to employ foreign workers. In response, the TES pilot was introduced by the DHA last October, designed to facilitate the recruitment of skilled professionals and streamline immigration procedures for participating companies.
The latest update from the DHA indicates substantial progress in the implementation of the TES, with approximately 108 major corporations actively pursuing trusted employer status. Of these, 65 have received approval, signaling a significant milestone in the scheme’s rollout. The approval process, overseen by the DHA’s Corporate Accounts Unit, entails a rigorous evaluation to ensure compliance with established standards.
According to Marisa Jacobs, Managing Director of Xpatweb, and Phindiwe Mbhele, Director of Corporate Accounts at the DHA, the issuance of memorandums of understanding (MOUs) for approved employers is imminent. Once finalized, these MOUs will pave the way for expedited visa applications under the new framework, providing a much-needed solution for businesses seeking to address their skill requirements.
Jacobs highlights the proactive measures being undertaken to expedite processing and facilitate a seamless transition for approved candidates. Moreover, a firm stance on compliance underscores the importance of adhering to prescribed standards, with any deviations carrying the risk of severe penalties, including the revocation of Trusted Employer Status. An appeal process has also been established to address declined applications, offering applicants an avenue for reconsideration.
