Operation Shanela, a concerted effort by the South African Police Service (SAPS), has yielded significant results in combating crime in the North West province. Over the period from Monday, 26 February to Sunday, 3 March 2024, a total of 1,154 suspects have been apprehended for various offenses, demonstrating the SAPS’s commitment to ensuring public safety and security in the region.
Among the arrests, 58 individuals were apprehended for drug-related offenses, highlighting the ongoing battle against substance abuse within local communities. Additionally, 31 individuals were arrested for illegal dealings in liquor, emphasizing law enforcement’s determination to curb illicit activities that endanger public health and safety.
The operation also targeted individuals driving under the influence of alcohol, with 17 arrests made for this offense. Moreover, eight individuals were apprehended for the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, a critical measure in preventing violent crimes and ensuring community safety.
Instances of property-related offenses were also addressed during Operation Shanela, with 37 arrests for burglaries and 53 for malicious damage to property. Furthermore, 67 suspected undocumented persons were handed over to the Department of Home Affairs for further processing, underlining efforts to address immigration-related issues.
One notable incident occurred on Tuesday, 26 February, when the Vryburg K9 and Mahikeng Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit intercepted a Toyota Etios Sedan in Moffat Street. Upon inspection, it was discovered that the vehicle had been reported stolen in April 2023 in Silverton. The driver, Makatise Joseph Khuabo (42), was promptly arrested and appeared before the Vryburg Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 29 February, facing charges of possessing a presumed stolen vehicle. He has been remanded in custody pending his next court appearance.
In another operation, Taung police acted on received information leading them to a premises where a 32-year-old suspect, Lesedi Nthutang, was found in possession of an illegal firearm. Nthutang was subsequently arrested and appeared before the Taung Magistrates’ Court, where he was granted R500 bail. His next court appearance is scheduled for Friday.
Operation Shanela also targeted serious and violent crimes, resulting in the apprehension of suspects involved in offenses such as murder, assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH), assault, and rape. A total of 293 wanted suspects were arrested during the operation, further illustrating law enforcement’s commitment to bringing offenders to justice.
Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lt Gen Sello Kwena, has praised the efforts of the police and other stakeholders involved in Operation Shanela, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts in combating crime. These actions send a clear message that crime will not be tolerated in the province, contributing to the overall safety and well-being of South Africans in the region.
