The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) has announced plans to allocate R740 million towards six road maintenance projects in the Kou-Kamma Local Municipality, located in the Eastern Cape province. These endeavors are poised to significantly enhance infrastructure and stimulate economic activity in the region.

Among the key projects is a substantial R80 million investment earmarked for periodic maintenance along the vital N2 National Road, spanning from the Bloukrans River bridge to the intersection of Storms River village. Additionally, another R50 million contract has been allocated for road maintenance from Storms River village to Wittelsbos. These initiatives aim to bolster road safety and facilitate smoother transportation for residents and businesses alike.

The comprehensive scope of work encompasses various maintenance activities, including surface seal construction, localized surface repairs, crack sealing, and edge break repairs. By addressing these critical aspects, SANRAL endeavors to ensure the longevity and efficiency of the road network within the municipality.

One of the flagship projects entails a special maintenance program scheduled to commence in June of this year along the R62 national road, spanning the border of the Eastern Cape and Western Cape provinces. This initiative is expected to benefit over 30 Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) while creating more than 200 job opportunities. Similarly, the special maintenance project slated for the R62 between Joubertina and Kareedouw is anticipated to generate around 250 job opportunities and benefit over 35 SMMEs.

SANRAL project manager, Siphesihle Bulose, provided insights into the project timelines and stages. While the construction tender for the special maintenance of the R62 between Louterwater and Joubertina is still in the design phase, the periodic maintenance between Bloukrans River bridge and Storms River village is currently undergoing tender evaluation. Furthermore, the contract for the periodic maintenance between Storms River Village and Wittelsbos is in the construction tender stage, set to conclude in March 2024.

Acknowledging the importance of fostering local entrepreneurship and skills development, SANRAL’s Transformation unit, led by Zenande Mpondo, emphasized the agency’s commitment to empowering SMME contractors. Through comprehensive training and skill enhancement programs, SANRAL aims to equip these businesses with the requisite acumen and expertise to thrive in the competitive tendering landscape.

Mpondo outlined the training framework, highlighting that all participating SMMEs will undergo assessment and class activities. To qualify for project awards, these entities must demonstrate competence aligned with the National Certificate: Construction Contracting National Qualifications Framework (NQF) 2. By offering accredited skills programs with credit value, SANRAL aims to bolster the capacity and sustainability of local businesses, ultimately contributing to broader socioeconomic development in the Eastern Cape.

In conclusion, SANRAL’s substantial investment in road maintenance projects within the Kou-Kamma Local Municipality signifies a significant stride towards enhancing infrastructure and fostering economic growth in the Eastern Cape. Through strategic partnerships with local businesses and robust skills development initiatives, SANRAL is poised to leave a lasting impact on the region’s transportation landscape, while simultaneously empowering communities and stimulating job creation.
