Preparations are in full swing for the highly anticipated Presidential Imbizo set to take place next Wednesday at the Sy Mthimunye Stadium in the heart of Emalahleni Local Municipality, Nkangala District, Mpumalanga. This significant event, spearheaded by Mpumalanga Premier Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane, is poised to welcome President Cyril Ramaphosa alongside Cabinet Ministers for a profound engagement under the banner of the District Development Model (DDM).
Anticipation is high, with an estimated 3,000 attendees from various sectors of Mpumalanga’s populace, including traditional leaders, civil society organizations, labor unions, women, youth, persons with disabilities, and business delegates, slated to participate. The aim of this gathering is to foster a participatory democracy ethos and provide citizens with a unique opportunity to directly interface with the President on matters pertaining to development.
Premier Mtshweni-Tsipane underscored the pivotal role of the Imbizo in bolstering participatory democracy, emphasizing its function as a conduit for citizens to articulate developmental concerns. “Mpumalanga is fully prepared to host the Presidential Imbizo. We applaud the President’s commitment to engaging our citizens and soliciting solutions to service delivery challenges,” remarked the Premier, drawing from the success of previous Imbizos, notably the one held in Gert Sibande District.
Central to the Imbizo’s agenda is the government’s pledge to uphold the principle of ‘Leave no one behind,’ particularly as South Africa commemorates three decades of democracy. Premier Mtshweni-Tsipane urged citizens to leverage various communication channels, including social media platforms, to voice their perspectives and proposals directly to the President.
To ensure broad accessibility, proceedings of the Imbizo will be broadcasted live across multiple platforms, including radio and television stations, as well as via Facebook livestream on the Mpumalanga Provincial Government page and Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) social media platforms.
The Presidential Imbizo serves as a vital platform for stakeholders—ranging from government entities to traditional leaders, civil society organizations, and grassroots communities—to collectively address immediate challenges and foster sustainable development. This participatory framework aligns with South Africa’s democratic ethos, empowering citizens to actively shape their destinies and influence service delivery.
As the nation embraces participatory democracy as a cornerstone of governance, the Presidential Imbizo stands as a testament to the power of citizen engagement in driving meaningful change. Through dialogue, collaboration, and collective action, Mpumalanga and the broader South African community endeavor to forge a path towards inclusive growth and prosperity for all.
