The Minister of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment, Barbara Creecy, has responded to stakeholders’ requests by extending the comment period for the revised draft National Biodiversity Economy Strategy (NBES). This extension, announced under Government Notice No. 4492, Government Gazette No. 50279 on 8 March 2024, grants an additional 14 days beyond the initial deadline of Friday, 22 March 2024.

Minister Creecy emphasized the importance of accommodating stakeholders’ need for more time to provide input, expressing gratitude for their interest. The revised draft NBES will undergo comprehensive discussions at the upcoming Biodiversity Economy and Investment Indaba.

In adherence to Section 24 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, which mandates the protection of the environment for present and future generations, the NBES plays a crucial role. By promoting conservation and ensuring the sustainable utilization of natural resources, the strategy aims for ecologically sustainable development while fostering inclusive and equitable socio-economic growth.

The Revised National Biodiversity Economy Strategy draws upon the principles outlined in the White Paper on Conservation and Sustainable Use of South Africa’s Biodiversity. Approved by Cabinet on 29 March 2023 and published for implementation on 14 June 2023 under Government Notice No. 3537, Government Gazette No. 48785, this paper provides the foundation for effective biodiversity conservation and sustainable resource management.

Members of the public are encouraged to submit written comments within the extended 14-day period, commencing from 22 March 2024 or the date of publication in newspapers, whichever is later. Submissions can be made via post, hand delivery, or email to the addresses provided below:
