The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government reaffirmed its commitment to bolstering the efforts of Transnet Pipelines (TPL) in tackling operational challenges, as announced by Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube following a crucial meeting with Sibongiseni Khathi, Acting Chief Executive of Transnet Pipelines.
The gathering was primarily convened to offer the Premier an in-depth insight into TPL’s activities, underlining the pivotal role of the fuel pipeline in ensuring uninterrupted energy supply within the region.
TPL, a vital division of Transnet SOC Ltd, is responsible for overseeing South Africa’s extensive network spanning 3,114 kilometers of high-pressure petroleum and gas pipelines, vital arteries of the nation’s energy infrastructure.
A key focus of the discussion was acquainting the Premier with upcoming capital ventures earmarked for initiation within KwaZulu-Natal, notably the forthcoming liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Richards Bay and the TM1 Accumulator Tanks project in Island View. These initiatives hold immense potential for bolstering the province’s economic landscape.
During the engagement session held on Friday, Khathi outlined pressing issues such as fuel theft along TPL’s pipelines and encroachments along the pipeline servitude. Additionally, he stressed the imperative of securing requisite licenses and approvals, including timely completion of Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) for the slated projects.
“Establishing robust ties with the KZN government is paramount to our commitment to sustainable growth and community involvement. The discussions were illuminating, and we eagerly anticipate the collaborative prospects for advancing the region’s economy,” remarked Khathi.
Echoing this sentiment, Premier Dube-Ncube emphasized the significance of the cooperative ethos demonstrated during the meeting, underscoring a shared dedication to TPL’s operational excellence and the fruition of impending capital ventures.
“Our vested interest in resolving these challenges stems from the understanding that the province’s economic vitality, crucial for job creation and mitigating unemployment, hinges upon the efficient functioning of strategic entities like TPL,” asserted Dube-Ncube.
This meeting constitutes a pivotal segment of a series of engagements spearheaded by the Premier with diverse stakeholders across various sectors, setting the stage for the upcoming State of the Province Address (SOPA) scheduled for February 28, 2024.
In essence, the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government’s unwavering support for TPL underscores a collaborative endeavor aimed at fortifying the region’s economic fabric and fostering sustainable development initiatives for the benefit of all South Africans.
