In a decisive move to bolster the ongoing battle against crime in KwaZulu-Natal, the provincial government has unveiled plans to enlist 1000 social crime prevention volunteers, set to be deployed across the province. Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube made the groundbreaking announcement during her State of the Province Address (SOPA) in Pietermaritzburg, emphasizing the government’s steadfast commitment to community safety.
Over the past four years, KwaZulu-Natal has witnessed a substantial augmentation in police capacity, with over 4,000 new officers enlisted in the last two years alone, disclosed Dube-Ncube. This concerted effort underscores the government’s proactive approach in addressing crime within local communities.
Moreover, the forthcoming 2024/25 financial year will witness the establishment of a pioneering Community Safety Intervention Unit (CSIU) under the Department of Community Safety and Liaison. This unit, poised to collaborate with various law enforcement agencies, aims to serve as a potent force multiplier, engaging both proactively and reactively in combating crime.
Acknowledging the pivotal role of resources in law enforcement, Dube-Ncube highlighted the South African Police Service’s (SAPS) commitment to enhancing resource allocation in KwaZulu-Natal. Notably, this includes an influx of vehicles and trainee constables, further fortifying the region’s law enforcement capabilities.
Additionally, the Department of Community Safety and Liaison has procured 60 safety patrol cars earmarked for deployment by Community Safety Committees and Community Police Forums. These vehicles will complement police efforts, amplifying the scope and efficacy of crime prevention initiatives.
Addressing the pressing issue of cross-border crime, Premier Dube-Ncube underscored the province’s diplomatic efforts to repatriate South African properties unlawfully detained in neighboring countries. Collaborative engagements with diplomatic counterparts, including meetings with the Mozambican High Commissioner, signify KwaZulu-Natal’s resolve to curb cross-border criminal activities.
Furthermore, the provincial government has joined forces with the SAPS’ Specialised KZN Stabilising Team to combat criminality in the Manguzi area comprehensively. These joint interventions have yielded tangible results, leading to the arrest of numerous high-profile criminals, with several cases already in progress.
During a recent visit to the region alongside Police Minister Bheki Cele, Premier Dube-Ncube highlighted the significant achievements of the Specialised KZN Stabilising Team. Notably, the team has apprehended 103 suspects, securing convictions for four individuals, with an additional 42 cases under active investigation.
This multifaceted approach underscores KwaZulu-Natal’s unwavering commitment to fostering safer communities through strategic partnerships and innovative crime prevention initiatives. As the province forges ahead in its fight against crime, the recruitment of 1000 social crime prevention volunteers stands as a testament to the collective resolve to safeguard the well-being of all South Africans.
