The commencement of the inquiry into the tragic demise of 21 young individuals at the Enyobeni Tavern in the Eastern Cape has been rescheduled to May 11. This alteration stems from the unavailability of the tavern’s proprietors, Siyakhangela Ndevu and his spouse Vuyokazi, who are pivotal witnesses in the forthcoming inquiry slated to transpire at Mdantsane Magistrate’s Court in the Eastern Cape.
Earlier in February, the aforementioned duo received a sentence from the East London Regional Court, decreeing a fine of R5,000 each or a 100-day prison term.
To date, seven witnesses have provided testimonies within the scope of this inquiry. Its primary objective is to ascertain whether any party should be held culpable for the tragic events that unfolded on June 26, 2022, claiming the lives of 21 young individuals.
Precious Daniel, the legal representative of the tavern owners, elucidated, “I have not engaged with my clients since the preceding case in February. Hence, the adjournment is necessitated to ensure their availability for the subsequent hearing and to clarify my legal stance concerning their representation. These are the principal reasons underpinning today’s postponement.”

He remarked, “Following the Department of Health’s release of the findings, many parents expressed dissatisfaction.
