The MEC for the Department of Human Settlements in the North West province, Nono Maloyi, delivered a glimmer of hope to the residents of the YizoYizo informal settlement during a meeting attended by over 200 residents. MEC Maloyi confirmed that the settlement would undergo significant upgrades, and essential services would be provided to improve the living conditions of the community.
YizoYizo, located near the industrial area in Tlhabane, has been an established informal settlement for more than two decades. Despite the relocation of over 600 residents to Seralemeng by the Department of Human Settlements, the settlement has continued to grow, with an estimated population of over a thousand families.
During the meeting, MEC Maloyi expressed his determination to swiftly address the hazardous living conditions in YizoYizo. He assured residents that he would personally oversee the progress of the settlement’s upgrade. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, he emphasized the need to build houses promptly and restore the dignity of the residents, highlighting that it is a constitutional mandate.
The news brought immense joy to long-time resident Ms. Anna Ditsebe, who has been residing in YizoYizo for over 20 years. Ms. Ditsebe, in her late 60s, spoke of the residents’ persistent pleas to the municipality for intervention and improvement in living conditions. She expressed her optimism, saying, “Today’s message was music to our ears. We are more hopeful now that the government is here, and we will see significant improvements in the area with essential services being rendered. It’s been a serious struggle, but now we can see the light at the end of the tunnel.”
In addition to the announcement of the settlement upgrade, MEC Maloyi revealed that the Department of Public Works and the Rustenburg local municipality have made land available for human settlement development. The MEC emphasized the immediate commencement of the process and called for the employment of young people to assist with household verification and beneficiary administration.
Responding to allegations that his intervention in the YizoYizo challenge was politically motivated, MEC Maloyi dismissed such claims. He stated that he had only been in government for less than a year and that his key priorities as the MEC for Corporative Governance, Human Settlements, and Traditional Affairs were to ensure the delivery of services in local government. He has made it a priority to unblock stalled projects and ensure that eligible beneficiaries receive habitable homes, all in an effort to create sustainable human settlements in the North West province.
The news of the impending upgrades and provision of services in YizoYizo has brought renewed hope to the residents who have endured challenging living conditions for years. With MEC Maloyi personally overseeing the progress, the residents eagerly await the realization of their dreams of improved housing and a better quality of life.
