Thabo Meeko, the MEC (Member of Executive Council) for the Department of Economic, Small Business Development, Tourism, and Environmental Affairs (DESTEA), alongside Free State Premier Mxolisi Dukwana, will be officially inaugurating the Rui Star Iron-Steel plant on Friday, 21 July 2023. The launch ceremony will take place at the Thaba Nchu Industrial Park, marking a significant milestone for industrialization in the region.

The establishment of the Rui Star Iron-Steel plant aims to stimulate economic growth in the Free State province and its surrounding areas, while simultaneously generating much-needed employment opportunities. As part of its operations, the company sources scrap metals from various locations across the country, transforming them into steel and iron for both domestic and international markets.

With an investment value exceeding R300 million, the Rui Star Iron-Steel plant has already created 150 job opportunities. However, once the facility is fully commissioned, it is anticipated that over 500 individuals will be employed, making a significant contribution to reducing unemployment rates in the area.

Speaking about the investment, MEC Meeko emphasized the importance of attracting more investors to foster economic growth in the Free State province and generate employment for local communities. He stated, “The establishment of the Rui Star Iron-Steel manufacturing plant is a clear demonstration of our commitment to attracting more investors to bolster the Free State economy and create job opportunities for our local citizens.”

In line with this vision, the DESTEA has undertaken a roadshow to engage with local municipalities and encourage them to develop incentive packages aimed at attracting further investments and unlocking local economic opportunities. By actively collaborating with local authorities, the department aims to create an environment that is conducive to business growth and development, ultimately benefitting the entire province.

The launch of the Rui Star Iron-Steel plant not only represents a significant economic milestone for the Free State province but also signifies the commitment of the government to foster industrialization and create sustainable employment opportunities. This venture has the potential to stimulate economic activity, attract further investments, and contribute to the overall growth and development of the region.

The investment in the Rui Star Iron-Steel plant aligns with the government’s broader economic objectives and reflects the Free State province’s determination to position itself as a key player in the national industrial landscape. As the plant begins operations, it is expected to have a positive ripple effect on the local community, with job creation and increased economic activity being the primary outcomes.

With the launch of this significant project, the Free State province takes a step forward in realizing its economic potential. The development of industries, such as the Rui Star Iron-Steel plant, not only strengthens the local economy but also contributes to the overall progress of South Africa. The Free State government, in collaboration with its partners, remains dedicated to fostering a conducive business environment and attracting further investments to propel the province’s growth trajectory forward.
