In a bid to bridge the digital divide and empower rural communities with access to educational resources, the Social Development Deputy Minister, Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu, has partnered with the MTN SA Foundation to launch a state-of-the-art multimedia centre in Ezingolweni, Port Shepstone. This initiative, which forms part of the preparations for Social Development Month in October, seeks to provide residents of Ezingolweni with valuable educational content and computer skills.
This multimedia centre’s inauguration is the result of a long-standing public-private partnership between the Department of Social Development and the MTN SA Foundation. The key objective of this collaboration is to emphasize the vital role of tribal authorities in rural communities. This effort builds upon previous initiatives, including the Rock Leadership Programme launched in 2018, which aimed to mobilize traditional leaders in the fight against HIV and AIDS and gender-based violence.
The multimedia centre in Ezingolweni is a significant step forward in the MTN SA Foundation’s commitment to supporting the communities of KwaZulu-Natal. It features a state-of-the-art design with connectivity provided by MTN at no cost for 24 months. This 20-seat facility is equipped with an electronic curriculum and an interactive board, enhancing the learning experience for community members.
Social Development Month is an annual celebration designed to bring social development services closer to the people. This year, it is celebrated under the theme: ‘Working together to eradicate poverty and other social ills.’ The launch of the multimedia centre is not only a testament to the commitment of the government and private sector in addressing social issues but also a practical step towards achieving this year’s theme.
The collaboration between the Department of Social Development and the MTN SA Foundation to launch a multimedia centre in Ezingolweni showcases the power of public-private partnerships in addressing pressing social challenges. It not only provides access to education and computer skills but also underscores the importance of tribal authorities in rural communities. As we approach Social Development Month, this initiative serves as a beacon of hope in the collective effort to eradicate poverty and improve the lives of South Africans.
The Ezingolweni multimedia centre stands as a symbol of progress and empowerment, offering the local community a gateway to knowledge and economic opportunities. It is a reminder that, through collaboration and innovation, we can work together to build a brighter future for all, irrespective of geographical location or socio-economic background.
