The Gauteng MEC for Transport and Logistics, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, officially launched the registration process for manufacturers of vehicle number plates on Monday. This initiative is a crucial component of the Gauteng Provincial Government’s plan to combat crime, corruption, vandalism, and lawlessness in the province through the implementation of a secure new number plate system.

The registration process aims to ensure that manufacturers and embossers of number plates operate within the bounds of the law, addressing the challenges that have arisen from non-compliant number plates over the years. These challenges include compromised safety, an increase in vehicle-related crime, and a lack of accountability from manufacturers.

MEC Diale-Tlabela emphasized the importance of compliance with Section 5 of the National Road Traffic Act, which strictly prohibits the manufacturing, selling, or distribution of number plates without proper registration. By implementing a registration process, the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport is taking a proactive stance in securing the entire value chain, from manufacturing to distribution, to provide motor vehicle owners with confidence in the legitimacy and quality of their number plates.

Manufacturers interested in producing number plates will be required to submit their applications for scrutiny to ensure accuracy and compliance. Compliance inspectors will diligently inspect the production sites of embossers to ensure adherence to regulations. Upon approval of their applications, manufacturers will need to sign a Service Level Agreement with the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport and make the necessary payments.

In addition to enhancing security and accountability, MEC Diale-Tlabela highlighted the importance of inclusivity and diversity within the number plate manufacturing value chain. The department aims to encourage the involvement of new entrants, women, youth, and persons living with disabilities in the industry. By promoting inclusivity, the initiative seeks to create opportunities for underrepresented groups, foster economic growth, and equip individuals with the necessary skills and resources to establish their own small, medium, and micro-sized enterprises (SMMEs).

The launch of the registration process aligns with the Gauteng Premier’s vision for the GGT2030. During his State-of-the-Province address in February 2023, Premier Panyaza Lesufi announced that the province would introduce new number plates with tightened security features, making it difficult for criminals to engage in acts of criminality.

The Gauteng government is committed to improving public safety, combating crime, and promoting economic empowerment through the implementation of a secure number plate system. Motor vehicle owners can look forward to enhanced security and accountability, while individuals from diverse backgrounds have the opportunity to contribute to the industry and establish their own businesses. The registration process marks a significant step forward in ensuring the integrity of number plates and fostering a safer and more inclusive Gauteng.
