In a highly anticipated move, Microsoft has unveiled a new Windows Insider Preview Build (25905) that introduces a vibrant and contemporary approach to emoji design within the Windows 11 operating system. This release fulfills the promise made by Microsoft nearly two years ago to replace the outdated and flat emoji designs reminiscent of Apple’s iOS 7 era.

The latest Windows Insider Preview Build showcases an exciting array of 3D emoji, which are similar to the gradient-style designs introduced in Microsoft Teams last year. These captivating new emoji imbue characters like ghosts, unicorns, and starry-eyed emoticons with a mesmerizing three-dimensional appearance that pops out from the screen.

Microsoft had first announced their plans for 3D emoji back in July 2021. However, when Windows 11 was launched in November of the same year, users were disappointed to find that the emoji lacked the promised three-dimensional effect. It has now become apparent that these initial flat emoji were merely temporary placeholders while Microsoft continued refining the 3D versions. The company subsequently rolled out the upgraded emoji to Microsoft Teams in early 2022, generating positive feedback from users.

The recent image shared by Microsoft showcases a visual comparison between the current Windows 11 emoji, the upcoming 3D upgrade, and the original flat icons. The stark contrast highlights the significant improvement in design and aesthetics achieved through the new emoji, providing users with a more visually engaging and dynamic experience.

According to Microsoft, the incorporation of the 11 COLRv1 color font format in Windows 11 enables the display of “richer emoji with a 3D-like appearance.” These enhanced emoji designs will not only be available in Windows 11 but will also be integrated into select applications and browsers, enriching user interactions across various platforms.

To gain access to these exciting new emoji, Windows 11 users are required to sign up for the Windows Insider program. Members of the program can obtain the latest build either directly from Microsoft by downloading the latest ISO or through Windows 11 software updates if they are on the Canary Channel.

With the introduction of 3D emoji, Microsoft demonstrates its commitment to continuously enhancing the user experience within Windows 11. By aligning emoji designs with modern aesthetics, Microsoft allows users to express themselves in a more visually captivating and immersive manner, injecting an extra layer of vibrancy into their digital interactions.

As Windows 11 continues to evolve, it is clear that Microsoft is dedicated to delivering innovative features and visual enhancements that elevate the overall user experience. The introduction of 3D emoji is a testament to Microsoft’s ongoing efforts to push the boundaries of design and creativity, empowering users to communicate in more expressive and engaging ways.
