In a bid to challenge Nvidia’s stronghold in the AI chip market, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has announced a groundbreaking lineup of products tailored for large language models (LLMs). The move comes as the demand for artificial intelligence capabilities continues to surge across industries.
AMD revealed its latest offerings, the Instinct MI300X accelerator and the Instinct M1300A accelerated processing unit (APU), specifically designed for the demanding requirements of training and running large language models. The MI300X, touted as the highest-performing accelerator globally, boasts a 1.5 times increase in memory capacity compared to its predecessor, the M1250X.

AMD has strategically partnered with tech giants to deploy its cutting-edge products:
AMD’s release of the MI300A APU for data centers is poised to expand its total addressable market to $45 billion. Combining CPUs and GPUs for enhanced processing speed, the MI300A promises higher-performance computing, faster model training, and an impressive 30 times improvement in energy efficiency. Notably, it will power the El Capitan supercomputer at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, expected to deliver over two exaflops of performance.
The introduction of the Ryzen 8040 processors is geared towards embedding more native AI functions into mobile devices. AMD claims a 1.6 times improvement in AI processing performance compared to previous models, with integrated neural processing units (NPUs). Beyond AI, the 8040 series is expected to deliver a 65 percent faster video editing experience and a 77 percent improvement in gaming performance compared to competitors like Intel.
AMD anticipates that manufacturers including Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Razer will integrate Ryzen 8040 chips into their products by the first quarter of 2024.
AMD’s commitment to AI innovation extends to software with the release of the Ryzen AI Software Platform, facilitating the offloading of AI models into NPUs to reduce power consumption on Ryzen-powered laptops. Furthermore, the next generation of its Strix Point NPUs is scheduled for release in 2024.
Lisa Su, CEO of AMD, emphasized the intensifying competition in the AI chip market, characterizing it as an “AI chip arms race.” Su highlighted the critical role of GPU availability as the primary driver of AI adoption. According to Su, the MI300X stands as a comparable alternative to Nvidia’s H100 in training LLMs, surpassing H100 in inference performance.
As AMD positions itself as a formidable contender in the AI chip landscape, the company aims to tap into a broader user base, reaching beyond cloud providers to target enterprises and startups.
