Amidst a dip in September, CareerJunction’s data reveals a rising job landscape in South Africa. Hiring surged, marking a 6% boost in October 2023 compared to the preceding year. The momentum continued with a 7% increase from September 2023.

This upswing in recruitment, spurred by Admin, Office & Support, IT, and Finance sectors, propelled overall job activity. CareerJunction’s Industry Report delves into this surge, dissecting the employment market’s dynamics in South Africa.

The report’s insights draw from 5,000 top recruiters, agencies, and employers utilizing the CareerJunction platform. While Admin, Office & Support, and IT sectors witnessed recent hiring spikes, the past three months revealed a slowdown.

Contrarily, sectors like Architecture & Engineering, Cleaning, Maintenance & Repair, and Marketing showed incremental improvements during this period. Analyzing hiring trends between August-October 2023 and May-July 2023 indicated positive recruitment for specific occupations:

  • Architecture & Engineering (+8%)
  • Cleaning, Maintenance & Repair (+5%)
  • Marketing (+4%)

These sectors exhibited a promising surge, reflecting growing job opportunities. However, a different narrative emerged for Admin, Office & Support, Information Technology, and Business & Management sectors, witnessing declining hiring trends.

Regional insights unveiled steady recruitment distribution across provinces. Despite a 2% decrease, Gauteng remains the epicenter of job prospects, contributing 52% of South Africa’s opportunities. Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal combined constitute 33% of job offerings, with Western Cape accounting for 22%.

Building & Construction professionals saw consistent demand escalation across Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Western Cape from August to October 2021 and 2023. A notable year-on-year spike (2022 to 2023) in this sector was witnessed:

  • Gauteng: 41% increase
  • KwaZulu-Natal: 70% increase
  • Western Cape: 98% increase

Additionally, Architecture & Engineering experienced heightened demand in all three provinces. Manufacturing & Assembly saw a substantial surge in Gauteng and KZN.

Marketing showed significant growth in job opportunities, primarily in Gauteng and the Western Cape. Noteworthy salary ranges for applicants in this domain include:

  • SEO Specialist: R17,977 to R22,443 per month
  • Digital Marketing Manager: R38,014 to R55,115 per month
  • Recruitment Consultant: R15,275 to R21,523 per month
