President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to spearhead South Africa’s representation at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’s (UNFCCC) 28th Conference of Parties (COP28) scheduled in Dubai.

The conference spans from November 30 to December 12, with President Ramaphosa guiding the South African delegation on December 1 and 2. Following his participation, Minister Barbara Creecy will oversee the country’s involvement until the conference’s conclusion on December 12.

The South African contingent will encompass government and business figures, emphasizing the crucial role of collaborations in addressing climate change and ensuring sustainable development, as highlighted by the Presidency.

COP28 will encompass the 18th COP Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP18) and the fourth COP Meeting of the Parties to the Paris Agreement (CMA). These sessions will coincide with the broader conference, with a significant event being the inaugural Global Stocktake (GST).

The GST holds immense importance, providing a comprehensive assessment of advancements made since the Paris Agreement’s inception in 2015. This evaluation aims to streamline climate actions and bridge gaps in progress by identifying necessary measures for implementation.

Moreover, the stocktake will aid participating parties in formulating their subsequent nationally determined contributions to the Paris Agreement. This process aims to bolster ambition, expedite climate action, and foster enhanced international cooperation.

Parallel to this global endeavor, President Ramaphosa will engage with the Matjhabeng Local Municipality as part of the District Development Model Presidential Imbizo in the Free State.

The Matjhabeng region thrives predominantly on gold and uranium mining, positioning itself as a pivotal hub within the Free State goldfields.

Scheduled at the Kopano Indoor Sports Centre in Thabong, Welkom, under the theme “Leave no one Behind,” this Imbizo is a continuum of previous visits undertaken in Bloemfontein at the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality.

This engagement aims to review progress made since the last Presidential Imbizo and build on commitments made by the Free State Provincial Government to address service delivery challenges.

The platform of the DDM Presidential Imbizo enables direct interaction between communities, President Ramaphosa, Ministers, and local leadership, ensuring a two-way conversation on pertinent issues.

Furthermore, this initiative aligns with the National Development Plan and provincial Growth and Development Strategies, striving to enhance service delivery, promote social cohesion, and advance the developmental state agenda.

On December 12, President Ramaphosa will host the inaugural Science, Technology, and Innovation Presidential Plenary. This forum aims to convene leaders across government, industry, academia, and civil society to discuss the progress and challenges faced in the National System of Innovation (NSI).

The discussions will explore strategies for Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) and skills development to positively impact the South African economy, reiterating the Presidency’s commitment to fostering technological advancement and economic growth.
