CAPE TOWN – The BRICS Ministers of Foreign Affairs and International Relations convened in Cape Town, South Africa, on June 1, 2023, to discuss major global and regional trends and issues, reaffirming their commitment to strengthening the framework of BRICS cooperation.
The BRICS group, comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, reiterated their commitment to strengthening multilateralism and upholding international law, including the principles enshrined in the United Nations (UN) Charter. They expressed concern about the use of unilateral coercive measures, which they deemed incompatible with the principles of the UN Charter and detrimental to the developing world.
The Ministers also called for reforms of the principal organs of the United Nations, including the UN Security Council (UNSC), to make them more representative, effective, and efficient. China and Russia, in particular, emphasized the importance of Brazil, India, and South Africa’s roles in international affairs and supported their aspiration to play a greater role in the UN.
The BRICS Ministers underscored the importance of the G20 as the premier multilateral forum for economic cooperation. They expressed support for India, Brazil, and South Africa, who will be chairing the G20 from 2023 to 2025, and wished them success in their presidencies.

The Ministers congratulated Ms. Dilma Rousseff, former President of Brazil, on her appointment as President of the New Development Bank (NOB) and expressed confidence in her ability to strengthen the NOB in effectively achieving its mandate.
