The Department of Water and Sanitation has recently announced the availability of comprehensive bursaries for the upcoming 2024 academic year. These bursaries are specifically aimed at grade 12 learners who have a keen interest in pursuing studies in the water and sanitation field. The application process will be open for a period of five months, from July 1 to November 30, 2023. The department is looking to award bursaries to learners who have demonstrated outstanding academic performance, financial need, and possess the relevant skills set in the sector.

According to the department’s spokesperson, Wisane Mavasa, the bursaries provided by the department are truly comprehensive. They cover full tuition fees, accommodation and food expenses as per university guidance, books and stationery allowance, as well as a monthly stipend. This holistic approach aims to alleviate financial burdens and ensure that students can fully focus on their academic pursuits.

One distinctive feature of these bursaries is that they provide more than just financial support. Recipients will also receive employment contracts, which will grant them relevant workplace exposure and additional training. This opportunity allows bursars to gain practical experience and prepare them to register as professionals with their respective professional bodies.

For the 2024 academic year, the Department of Water and Sanitation will only consider applications from first-year students pursuing the following qualifications:

BSc/BEng in Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineering
BSc in Hydrology, Geohydrology, Environmental Management, Project Management, Environmental Sciences, and Environmental and Water Sciences

To apply for these bursaries, interested students can send their completed application forms via email to bursaries@dws.gov.za. It is advised to visit the department’s official website and social media pages for more detailed information regarding the bursary program.

The bursary initiative primarily focuses on providing opportunities to previously disadvantaged and impoverished individuals from poverty-stricken and rural communities. Furthermore, students with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply. This commitment to inclusivity highlights the department’s dedication to fostering diversity within the water and sanitation sector.

The Department of Water and Sanitation’s comprehensive bursaries not only support learners in their academic journey but also empower them to become future professionals in the field. By offering financial assistance, practical exposure, and additional training, the department aims to bridge the gap between education and employment while addressing socio-economic inequalities.

As the bursary application period commences, eligible learners are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to further their studies in the water and sanitation field. The department’s investment in education and skills development serves as a significant step toward building a capable and knowledgeable workforce to address the challenges and opportunities in the water and sanitation sector.
