The road construction project from Molelema to Matsheng, which had previously been halted due to a dispute between the Department of Public Works and Roads and the Contractor, is set to resume, according to an official announcement made by MEC for Public Works and Roads, Gaoage Oageng Molapisi, on 9 May 2023.

The dispute, which caused considerable delays in the project, has been resolved following extensive deliberations geared towards improved service delivery. The MEC emphasized the government’s duty to resolve such issues swiftly to prevent unnecessary delays in project completion.

“Government officials should at all times strive to resolve disputes between appointed contractors and the Department expeditiously, to avoid unnecessary delays in the completion of projects,” Molapisi said.

The road project, which is slated for completion within an eight-month period, will be carried out at a revised cost. More importantly, it is set to provide much-needed employment opportunities for the local community members, with a focus on small, medium, and micro-sized enterprises (SMMEs).

Molapisi stressed the importance of the project’s uninterrupted continuation, recognizing the delays that have already been incurred. He called on all stakeholders to transition from being obstacles to enablers, facilitating the timely completion of the project and contributing to infrastructure protection.

“Noting the delay on this project, I am placing a huge responsibility on all of us to take responsibility to allow works to proceed uninterrupted. Instead of us being obstacles to the timeous completion of projects, we need to become enablers and assist in further protecting our infrastructure,” Molapisi added.

The resumption of this road project is expected to boost the local economy and improve connectivity and transportation in the region, positioning Taung more strategically within the national infrastructure network. It is indeed a significant development that underscores the government’s commitment to improving public services and ensuring sustainable economic growth.
