South Africa’s delegation to the World Economic Forum (WEF) 2024 Annual Meeting in Davos has concluded a comprehensive and fruitful engagement, reinforcing the country’s position as a global leader and promoting its attractiveness for growth and investment.

Leadership and Delegation

Led by the Minister of Finance, Mr. Enoch Godongwana, a high-profile delegation comprising key ministers from trade, industry, education, communication, and health participated in the WEF 2024, demonstrating South Africa’s commitment to engaging with diverse global stakeholders.

Rebuilding Trust and Global Leadership

The WEF 2024 theme, “Rebuilding Trust,” resonated with South Africa’s ongoing role as a regional and global leader. Minister Godongwana underscored the importance of multilateralism and cooperation, emphasizing their critical role in driving economic growth. The delegation’s message focused on fostering a fairer, more inclusive, and representative global system.

Economic Reforms and Progress

Addressing questions on the country’s economic reforms, particularly in energy, transport, logistics, and crime prevention, Minister Godongwana highlighted the substantial progress made in the three decades since achieving democracy. While acknowledging challenges in balancing fiscal sustainability, growth-accelerating reforms, and targeted social spending, he assured global partners of South Africa’s commitment to overcoming obstacles and achieving sustainable development.

Global Challenges and Opportunities

Discussions at the forum covered a spectrum of global challenges, including climate change, technology, trade, and multilateral cooperation. South Africa actively engaged in these conversations, contributing its perspectives and gaining insights into global initiatives in these crucial areas.

Regional and Global Partnerships

With South Africa set to assume the presidency of the G20 in 2025, the country showcased its commitment to playing a pivotal role in global economic governance. The expansion of the BRICS group and active participation in the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) emphasized South Africa’s dedication to shaping international decision-making bodies and promoting sustainable economic development.
