April 2022 saw a 7.8% drop in manufacturing production when compared to April 2021

Johannesburg, South Africa – According to Stats SA data issued on June 9th, 2021, manufacturing production declined by 7.8 percent in April 2022 compared to April 2021. Motor vehicles, vehicle accessories, fuel, chemical products, rubber, plastic products, food, beverages, basic iron and steel, nonferrous metal products, metal products, and machinery contributed the largest contributions.

  • petroleum, chemical products, rubber and plastic products (-10.3% and contributing -2.2%);
  • food and beverages (-3.7% and contributing -0.9%); and
  • basic iron and steel, nonferrous metal products, metal products, and machinery(-4,4 percent and contributing -0,9 of a percentage point).

Seasonally adjusted industrial output fell by 5.4% in April 2022 compared to March 2022. This came after month-on-month changes of 0.3% in March 2022 and -1.5% in February 2022.

Seasonally adjusted industrial output fell by 0.9% in the three months ending April 2022 compared to the previous three months. During this time period, seven of the 10 industrial divisions experienced negative growth rates.

Wood and wood products, paper, publishing, printing, basic iron and steel, nonferrous metal products, metal products, machinery, motor vehicles, parts and accessories, and other transport equipment had the most negative contributions.

Seasonally adjusted manufacturing sales fell 3.2% in April 2022 compared to March 2022. This came after month-on-month changes of 3.1% in March 2022 and -0.2% in February 2022.

Seasonally adjusted manufacturing sales climbed by 4,2% in the three months ending April 2022, as compared to the previous three months. Motor vehicles, parts and accessories, and other transportation equipment, as well as petroleum, chemical products, rubber, and plastic items, produced the largest contributions.
